Brushing is the more common method of applying shellac. Water resistant resists occasional spillage. Shellac also blocks the resin from pine knots and very oily exotic woods which can slow the drying of lacquer and varnish significantly. Shellac derived from indian lac bugs is a common food safe film finish and is highly water resistant.
